Key points:
- THC is pretty stable but known to degrade over time.
- Aromatic compounds in THC vape, like terpenes, are relatively less stable.
- Storage conditions significantly influence the life of THC vape carts.
Yes, THC vape cartridges (carts) can expire, but they do not necessarily “go bad” like food. Instead, over time, the potency, flavour, and overall quality degrade due to factors like oxidation, evaporation, and exposure to light, heat, and air.
Very organic molecule degrades over time. Though cannabinoids are pretty stable, but they are known to degrade. How fast they degrade depends on storage conditions. Exposure to direct sunlight and heat may accelerate these processes (1).
Any THC vape is a mix of multiple cannabinoids. They contain large amounts of cannabidiol (CBD), tens of minor cannabinoids, along with THC. When cannabinoids degrade, they might also change to other cannabinoids. It means that vape carts’ potency is well-preserved for a couple of years if they are stored properly.
Generally, it is good to see documents or consult a manufacturer to learn more about the product’s expiration date. When carts expire, they do not necessarily go bad, but they might not work as intended.
Additionally, it is worth understanding that there is also a legal requirement to mention the expiry date of products used or consumed by humans. Quite often, manufacturers mention an expiration period of one or two years, as generating stability data for longer periods is quite challenging.
This means that if products like vape carts are stored properly, away from direct sunlight, they might stay good for quite a long time. Most of them stay good for 1-2 years or even longer.
Of course, when we talk about the expiry period, we are talking about unopened carts. However, opened carts may lose their potency and flavour within 6 to 12 months.
When using new and unopened carts, it is just enough to look at the expiry date. It is not recommended to use any product after its expiration.
However, if you have stored carts at home for a long time or stored opened carts, then it is vital to check for signs of product degradation. For example, improperly stored carts may cause changes in the consistency of vape oil, its flavour may change, or carts may even become clogged.
Further, it is vital to understand that THC vape pens contain certain highly volatile aromatic compounds like terpenes. These are organic or natural compounds that impart flavour to vape pens. However, these volatile compounds are also less stable and tend to lose their aroma much faster (2).
Generally, THC degrades into CBN (cannabinol), which has more sedative effects but is much weaker than THC. As we already said, cannabinoids often change into other cannabinoids, resulting in different vaping experiences.
Finally, if the cart is expired, it may make vaping more difficult, and it might not produce many vapours, or it may become too thick.
So, once opened, store your carts away from direct sunlight and in a cool place (not essentially in a refrigerator). The ideal storage temperature for carts is 60–70°F (15–21°C). Of course, other precautions should be taken, like storing them upright to prevent leakage and so on.
To sum up, yes, THC vape carts can expire gradually, so it is essential to store them properly.
